These dogs have a double coat and need a lot of grooming. They shouldn't be shaved to eliminate grooming. Their skin is pink and are subject to sun burn when shaven. One benefit to their coat, is that they are almost self-cleaning. They can play in the water and get covered in mud and once they dry you can brush them and they are bright white again. They need their undercoat brushed out during the warmer months to help with their shedding. They do shed and they shed a lot. They have double dew claws on their hind legs and single dew claws on their front paws. They do need their nails trimmed regularly. A Great Pyrenees owner needs to be able to commit the time to grooming and caring for these dogs to keep them healthy.
